About your teacher: Matt Elliott-Williams
My approach:
- I value openness, kindness, and patience. Learning about music is both an adventure and fun! I do my best to make sure that attitude is reflected in the work we do.
My background:
- I’m a pianist and music theorist with over 14 years of experience in education and technology spaces.
- My music journey has been anything but one note: I started out playing bassoon in middle school, moved to the cello soon after, played harpsichord in undergrad, and focused on piano throughout graduate school while pursuing my doctorate in music theory.
- My doctoral dissertation explores virtual mixed reality, the Dutch Beeldenstorms, and Beethoven’s Egmont overture, and was supervised by Dr. Brian Moseley.
- I earned my Ph.D. in music theory and historical musicology from SUNY Buffalo (University at Buffalo), my Masters in Music Composition from Butler University, and my Bachelors in Music from University of Indianapolis.
- My music interests include: counterpoint, chromaticism, musical function and transformational theories, philosophy, critical theory, feminism, Marxism, and the Frankfurt School.
Some fun facts:
- My first ever CD was Shaquille O’Neal’s Shaq Diesel in 1993.
- My first ever live show was the Smashing Pumpkins in 1996.
- My favorite live show I’ve been to (so far) is Vampire Weekend’s recent eclipse concert in downtown Austin in 2024.
- I live in Austin, TX with my amazing wife and daughter, always on the lookout for the best coffee (currently Proud Mary Coffee on South Lamar) and tacos (currently Veracruz food truck at Radio Coffee on Menchaca).
